Challenges, setbacks, disappointments, and traumatic events test the human spirit. The choices made during stressful life experiences have the potential to define a person’s life. With that in mind, this course has been designed to help students build the capacities to handle challenges and upsets with greater clarity and confidence. By applying emotional self-regulation techniques, tools from mind-body medicine, embodied practices, and techniques from trauma research, students will learn how to stay grounded, maintain mental clarity, handle emotional upset, and make choices from a place of personal truth while navigating upset and crisis.
The overarching goal of this course is for students to have a greater sense of personal agency (feeling in control of their actions and choices) and self-efficacy (the feeling they have the capacity to take positive action while navigating a stressful life event). Being able to respond, rather than react, during the challenging moments of life is at the heart of personal resilience.
