Nicholas Roerich encountered the Kalagiya myth during his five-year expedition through the Himalayas. The myth prophesies the coming of the Lord Maitreya, the future Buddha of this world in Buddhist lore. According to the ancient teaching, before his emergence from Shambhala, a sacred call (Kalagiya) will ring out across the world, announcing his arrival. Only those who have successfully navigated the fearful waters of death and rebirth—releasing their early-life conditioning and reclaiming their authentic creative essence—will hear this sacred call. These initiated individuals will be the ones who will guide humanity into the Satya Yuga, or the Golden Age.
Just as the mythical horse carries the Chintamani and announces the sacred call across celestial realms, Roerich’s Peace Banner carries this ancient symbol of unity across nations, creating sacred spaces where culture, knowledge, and beauty remain honored and protected. Those who answer the sacred call are being asked, through the process of navigating their life challenges, to dedicate themselves not only to their transformation but also to preserving and protecting the wisdom traditions that guide humanity’s entry into the Golden Age.
While the ancient myth doesn’t explicitly mention life challenges, the “fearful waters of death and rebirth” can be understood as the transformative crucibles that every human being encounters. You can’t eliminate life’s difficulties, but you can choose whether to recognize the profound opportunity that lies within them.
